About the language
Greek, one of the oldest languages in the world, is spoken as a mother tongue by around 13 million people. It belongs to the Indo-European family and has a rich historical and cultural background. Greek is an official language in Greece, Cyprus and a few other countries. There are several dialects of Greek; modern Greek is based on ancient Greek. It is written with the Greek alphabet of 24 letters. Greek has had a great influence on many modern languages, particularly in science, mathematics, philosophy and medicine.
