About the language
Italian is a Romance language spoken mainly in Italy. It is one of the world's major languages: around 60 million people speak it as their mother tongue and many more as a second language. Italian has its origins in Vulgar Latin and is closely related to other Romance languages such as Spanish, Portuguese and French. It is known for its melodic sound, its wealth of dialects and a rich literary tradition that includes the works of Dante Alighieri, Petrarch and Boccaccio.
