About the language
Spanish — also known as Castellano or Español — is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. It belongs to the Romance family and is spoken as a mother tongue by more than 460 million people. Spanish is an official language in many countries, including Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and many others across Latin America. It is characterised by its melodic sound, its variety of dialects and a rich vocabulary containing many words of Latin and Arabic origin. Spanish has a long and fascinating history, closely bound up with Spanish culture and literature.
