About the language
Turkish is an Altaic language spoken as a mother tongue by more than 75 million people. It is spoken mainly in Turkey and in parts of Central Asia. Turkish belongs to the Oghuz branch of the Turkic languages and has a rich history reaching back to the 8th century. The language is written phonetically: words are spelt as they are pronounced. Because of historical influences, Turkish also contains many loanwords from Arabic, Persian and French. All in all, Turkish is a fascinating language with a rich cultural and linguistic tradition.
